Athletic Bilbao want to re-sign Ander Herrera from Manchester United and make him their highest-paid player, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish newspaper AS, as quoted by the Daily Mail, is reporting that the La Liga outfit are keen on a move to bring the midfielder back to the club this summer.

The same report says that Athletic Bilbao were interested in signing Herrera last summer when his contract was due to expire, but the Red Devils triggered a one-year extension to his deal.

Now though, it is being claimed that Athletic Bilbao are still interested in a deal and they will offer him a lucrative contract to try and tempt him back to Spain.

Herrera spent three years at Athletic Bilbao before paying out his own buy-out clause to join Manchester United in a £33m deal back in 2014.

His future has been something of a source of uncertainty after he fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford last season under Jose Mourinho.

According to the same story, Manchester United will listen to offers for Herrera, but they remain “not too keen” on losing the midfielder this summer.

Manchester United finished second in the Premier League and without a trophy last season.
