Gareth Bale wants to stay at Real Madrid and fight for a starting spot under new manager Julen Lopetegui, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Star is reporting that the Wales international is now keen to try and win over the new man in charge at the Bernabeu after having struggled to hold down a starting spot under Zinedine Zidane last season.

Bale had been quoted as saying that he would consider his future this summer after Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph, and that had prompted suggestions that Manchester United could move to try and sign the attacker ahead of next season.

However, those comments came before Zidane opted to step down at Real Madrid, with Lopetegui having been appointed as his successor last week.

Now, it is being claimed that the 28-year-old is ready to stay at Real Madrid and prove himself to his new boss, which has dealt Manchester United a blow in their hopes of signing the former Tottenham Hotspur star.

The same report says that Manchester United have long held an interest in signing Bale, but his apparent desire to stay at the Bernabeu this summer could now make a move impossible.
