Gary Neville has insisted that he is feeling optimistic about Manchester United heading into Jose Mourinho’s third campaign in charge.

It ended up being something of a disappointing second season for Mourinho in charge at Old Trafford last term as the Red Devils ended up in second place in the Premier League table and without a trophy.

Manchester United had won both the Europa League and League Cup in Mourinho’s first season at the club but struggled in all competitions last term.

However, the Portuguese coach did manage to lead the Red Devils to their highest finish in the Premier League since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.

Attentions are now inevitably turning towards the summer transfer window and the players Manchester United will look to bring in ahead of next season.

And Manchester United legend Neville has insisted that he is feeling confident about next season as Mourinho looks to steer the Red Devils towards a Premier League title challenge next term.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Neville said: “Once the disappointment finishes for all players and the coaching team and the fans, you always have that optimism for next season.

“That’s the way football always is. You always feel optimistic as a United fan about the next season and what the team can achieve.

“I’ve never – whether it be as a player, fan growing up, now today, never not felt optimistic going into a season. I’m positive for next season.”

Manchester United ended up 19 points behind runaway champions Manchester City last season despite being the Citizens’ closest challengers last term.
