Lukaku enjoyed a relatively strong debut campaign at Manchester United after having signed from Everton last summer, hitting 25 Premier League goals for the Red Devils in his first season at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old did receive some criticism for his record against Manchester United’s domestic rivals to prompt some pundits to question the striker’s big-game mentality.
However, Lukaku, who is currently preparing for the World Cup in Russia where Belgium will face England in the group stage, still managed to find the net five times in both the Champions League and the FA Cup in the 2017-18 season.
And former Arsenal star Merson is confident that Lukaku can build on a decent first season at Old Trafford.
Asked to give his thoughts on Lukaku’s debut season at Old Trafford, Merson replied: “Lukaku has scored goals. He is a young lad. He will score goals.”
Manchester United have already begun their summer recruitment drive ahead of next season.
The Red Devils signed both Diogo Dalot and Fred last week as Jose Mourinho looks to put together a squad capable of winning the Premier League title next season.
Manchester United finished second in the Premier League and without a trophy last season, and they have not won the top flight trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge in the 2012-13 season.
They missed the chance to win a trophy last term when they were beaten by Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
