Juan Mata has taken to social media to praise David De Gea despite the Manchester United goalkeeper’s howler in Spain’s 3-3 draw with Portugal at the World Cup on Friday night.

The Manchester United goalkeeper was at fault as he allowed Cristiano Ronaldo’s speculative long-range strike to slip through his fingers just before half-time.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo then went on to score a hat-trick as Portugal managed to claim a 3-3 draw and salvage a point from their opening group game in Russia.

The mistake was uncharacteristic from De Gea, who is widely considered to be one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.

However, his Manchester United team-mate Mata was quick to take to social media to praise the shot-stopper after the disappointment of Spain’s opening group game.

Mata wrote on Twitter: “You are the best, period. @D_DeGea.”

De Gea’s future at Manchester United has been something of a source of speculation in recent months but the goalkeeper has always insisted that he is committed to the Red Devils.

The Spanish shot-stopper has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid but it remains to be seen whether that is just newspaper speculation this summer or not.

Manchester United finished second and without a trophy in the Premier League last season.
