Jose Mourinho raves about 22-year-old linked with Man United
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was impressed with Aleksandr Golovin’s performance against Saudi Arabia
Jose Mourinho has raved about Aleksandr Golovin’s performance in Russia’s 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia to fuel talk of a move to Manchester United this summer.
The Russia international scored one goal and made three assists to help the hosts make a resounding start to their World Cup campaign despite being the worst ranked team in the tournament.
Golovin has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League over the past two seasons amid reported interest from bitter rivals Arsenal and Manchester United in the Russian playmaker.
The CSKA Moscow attacker is though to command a transfer fee in the region of £20m following another impressive seasons at the Russian side.
The 22-year-old scored eight goals and made three assists in 39 games in all competitions during the 2017-18 season.
Manchester United boss Mourinho is working with Russian broadcaster RT during the World Cup and the Portuguese head coach was impressed with Golovin’s performance against Saudi Arabia.
“The manager changed the team in relation to the match I watched in Austria. He played with a back four, which is normal against a team like Saudi,” Mourinho told RT.
“I think Alan Dzagoev was playing quite well but when he came out, the fact that Golovin could go to a more central position, I think it helped the team.”
He added: “The team became better. Golovin is a playmaker, he’s a player that gives the dynamic of the team. Denis Cheryshev is a fast boy on the wing, more of a winger than Golovin, stretch the game more than Golovin, so I think the change worked perfectly.”
Mourinho should know all about Golovin after his Manchester United side came up against the Russia international and CSKA Moscow in the Champions League group stage last season.
He made an assist in CSKA Moscow’s 4-1 loss to Manchester United in Russia before 2-1 loss at Old Trafford.
