Manchester United will be forced to sell David De Gea if the Spanish goalkeeper makes it clear that he wants to leave Old Trafford, Ian McGarry has claimed.

The Red Devils have become accustomed to fending off interest in their number one goalkeeper over the past three or four seasons.

La Liga giants Real Madrid have been regularly linked with a move to sign the Spain international from the Premier League runners up.

Indeed, De Gea was on the brink of a move to Real Madrid in the 2015 summer transfer window before the deal collapsed at the final moment.

The 27-year-old has been Manchester United’s standout player since Sir Alex Ferguson stood down following their last Premier League title success in 2013.

However, Real Madrid are thought to be interested in a potential swoop to sign the Spanish goalkeeper this summer following Julen Lopetegui’s appointment as their new manager.

Reporter McGarry claimed that Manchester United could be powerless to keep De Gea if the shot stopper requests a transfer.

“If he makes it clear to Man United that he wants to leave, they will have to sell,” McGarry told the Transfer Window podcast.

De Gea has one year left on his current deal at Manchester United but the FA Cup finalists do have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.
