Manchester United have paid £50m to get a deal over the line for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, according to reporter Michael Bridge.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move to sign Fred in the summer transfer window following Michael Carrick’s retirement at the end of the 2017-18 season.

On Tuesday, Manchester United confirmed that Fred had become their first summer signing following months of speculation.

The Brazil international would be capable of improving Jose Mourinho’s options in the middle of the park ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last season to secure their continued participation in the Champions League.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley following Eden Hazard’s winner from the penalty spot.

Manchester United made a premature exit from Europe after a 2-1 defeat by La Liga side Sevilla in the first round of the Champions League knockout stage.

Fred helped Shakhtar Donetsk to reach the Champions League round of 16 before a 2-1 loss to Serie A giants AS Roma.

Sky Sports News reporter Bridge believes Manchester United had to pay around £50m to sign the 25-year-old from the Ukrainian Premier League champions.

“Man United seem confident they will get it over the line,” Bridge told the Transfer Talk podcast before the deal was confirmed. “We understand it will be around £50m.”

Fred scored 14 goals in 156 games for Ukrainian side Shakhtar during his five-season stay.
