Manchester United will be Manchester City’s closest challengers rather than Liverpool FC next season, Craig Burley has claimed.

The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table last term after Manchester United finished ahead of Liverpool FC and Tottenham.

However, Manchester United ended up 19 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City to highlight the gap between the two clubs.

Jose Mourinho’s side lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley after Eden Hazard’s winner from the penalty spot.

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place but earned rave reviews for their swashbuckling performances in the Champions League.

The Reds lost 3-1 to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the European Cup showpiece to end a positive season on a disappointing note.

Liverpool FC signed Fabinho in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco earlier this month before Manchester United brought in Fred in a £50m deal from Shakthar Donetsk.

Former Chelsea FC defender Burley believes Manchester United will challenge Pep Guardiola’s side in the title race next term.

“Man United will be the closest,” Burley told ESPN FC. “Fred has come in and there will be more coming in…”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table to secure their best finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
