Reporter gives latest Man United update on Toby Alderweireld
Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge confirms Man United are struggling to get a deal over the line for Toby Alderweireld
Manchester United aren’t any closer to a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Michael Bridge.
The Red Devils have been linked with Tottenham’s contract rebel on a regular basis over the past few months.
Tottenham are rumoured to have offered Alderweireld a deal worth £130,000 a week during the 2017-18 season but the Manchester United target wants £180,000 a week.
If the Spurs star was to get the contract he desires, Alderweireld would be the best paid player ahead of England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, as well as playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Alderweireld’s current deal will expire at the end of next season but Spurs do have the option to extend the Belgium international’s contract by an extra 12 months.
However, if Spurs do opt to activate the clause in Alderweirld’s contract then the 29-year-old would be available for a cut-price £25m deal in the 2019 summer transfer window.
Sky Sports News reporter Bridge revealed that there has been no progress in Manchester United’s pursuit of Alderweireld.
“There is no update at the moment. He is away with Belgium,” Bridge told the Transfer Talk podcast.
“Man United wanted to get it done early. I understand Pochettino has the final say.”
