Man United will have to pay £55m to sign top 29-year-old defender – report
Tottenham Hotspur are demanding £55m for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld amid Man United interest, according to a report
Tottenham Hotspur have placed a £55m asking price on Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld, according to a report in England.
The London Evening Standard is reporting that Manchester United are confident of signing the Belgium international in the summer transfer window.
The same article states that Tottenham want to secure a premium price for the 29-year-old centre-half and Spurs have placed a £55m price tag on Alderweireld’s head.
According to the same story, the north London side’s demands have stalled talks between the two Premier League clubs over Alderweireld’s proposed sale.
Alderweireld’s current deal will expire at the end of next season but Spurs do have the option to extend the Belgium international’s contract by an extra 12 months.
However, if Spurs do opt to activate the clause in Alderweirld’s contract then the 29-year-old would be available for a cut-price £25m deal in the 2019 summer transfer window.
Alderweireld has only made two appearances in the calendar year so far after Mauricio Pochettino opted to stick with summer signing Davison Sanchez alongside Jan Vertonghen.
Tottenham signed the Belgian defender in a £12.5m deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the 2015 summer transfer window after he impressed on a season-long loan spell at Southampton.
