Insider reveals Man United’s first-choice target to improve Red Devils defence
Toby Alderweireld is Manchester United's top choice to improve their defence this summer, according to a report
Toby Alderweireld is Manchester United’s preferred choice to improve the defence this summer, according to Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge.
The Belgium international’s future in north London has been a source of speculation after the Tottenham star made just three appearances in 2018 so far.
Report in England have suggested that Spurs offered Alderweireld a deal worth £130,000 a week during the 2017-18 season but Alderweireld isn’t satisfied with the proposal.
The former Atletico Madrid defender will become a free agent next summer but Spurs do have the option to extend the Belgium international’s contract by an extra 12 months.
If Tottenham opt to activate the clause, Alderweireld would be available next summer in a cut price deal of £25m, which is well below is current value given Virgil van Dijk moved to Liverpool FC in a £75m deal from Southampton earlier this year.
Manchester United are in the market to improve their defence and the Red Devils have been linked with top talents such as Alderweireld and Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.
Sky Sports News reporter Bridge confirmed that Manchester United are eager to sign Alderweireld if the Red Devils can agree to a deal with Spurs.
“Their first choice is Alderweireld,” Bridge told the Transfer Talk podcast.
“Man United are going to negotiate with Spurs it will take a long time.”
Manchester United have signed Fred and Diogo Dalot in the summer transfer window so far.
