Insider claims Man United want 29-year-old to upgrade defence
Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge runs the rule over Man United's pursuit of Toby Alderweireld
Toby Alderweireld would be a big upgrade on Manchester United’s current options at centre-half, according to Michael Bridge.
The Belgium international is facing an uncertain future at the north London side having made a mere three appearances in the calendar year so far.
Tottenham are rumoured to have offered Alderweireld a deal worth £130,000 a week during the 2017-18 season but the Manchester United target wants £180,000 a week.
If the Spurs star was to get the contract he desires, Alderweireld would be the best paid player ahead of England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, as well as playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Alderweireld’s current deal will expire at the end of next season but Spurs do have the option to extend the Belgium international’s contract by an extra 12 months.
Sky Sports News reporter Bridge believes Alderweirield would be a great addition to the Manchester United team.
“Alderweireld will really strengthen Man United at the back. He will be a big upgrade on Jones and Smalling,” Bridge told the Transfer Talk podcast.
Alderweireld moved to Tottenham in a £12m deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The Belgian defender made a name for himself in the Premier League with a brilliant season on loan at Southampton in 2014-15.
