Manchester United are leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, Michael Bridge has claimed.

The Red Devils are looking to improve their defensive options in the current transfer window after a mixed 2017-18 season.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final after Phil Jones’ mistake allowed Eden Hazard to score the winner from the spot.

The 20-time English champions have shown a reluctance to use Eric Bailly in recent months after the Ivorian fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

Alderweireld has established himself as a top Premier League player at Tottenham following his move from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

The Belgium international can leave next summer in a £25m deal unless Spurs tie down the centre-half to a new contract.

Tottenham could be tempted to cash in on Alderweireld this summer, particularly given Davison Sanchez’s impressive first season.

Sky Sports News reporter Bridge has revealed that Manchester United are favourites to sign Alderweirield from Spurs.

“I can’t see him staying at Tottenham. Man United are the front runners,” Bridge told the Transfer Talk podcast.

The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table last term but Manchester United lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
