The Red Devils have been linked with a potential swoop to sign the Belgium international in the summer transfer window.
The Belgian defender’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2018-19 season unless Spurs activate a clause that will extend the centre-half deal by an extra 12 months.
If they do so, Alderweireld would be available on a £25m deal next summer as part of an intricate contract arrangement with the White Hart Lane outfit.
As a result, Tottenham are thought to be ready to cash in on a Belgian defender in the current transfer window to ensure the north London side recieve a significant return on Alderweireld.
Manchester United are in the market to sign a centre-half to bolster their defensive options following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final.
Jose Mourinho has alternated between Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling at centre-half over the past 12 months but the quartet have struggled to find consistency.
Former Spurs star Anderton believes Alderweireld would be an ideal candidate to fill the position at centre-half.
“I think [Toby] Alderweireld will leave Tottenham this summer,” Anderton told bWIN.
“Until his injury he was the best defender in the Premier League so his situation is definitely a problem for the club.
“He’s an unbelievable player and he has formed a fantastic partnership with [Jan] Vertonghen. Alderweireld will move on this summer because he wants to be paid what the best defenders earn and Tottenham won’t do that.
“Manchester United can afford to pay him far more money and he will massively boost their chances of winning the Premier League.”
