Insider comments on Tottenham’s reported asking price for Man United target
Ian McGarry comments on Tottenham's apparent high asking price for Man United target Toby Alderweireld
Ian McGarry has described Tottenham Hotspur’s reported asking price for Toby Alderweireld this summer as somewhat excessive.
The 29-year-old Belgian defender has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in recent days as Jose Mourinho looks to shore up his defensive options ahead of next season.
Alderweireld is widely considered to be one of the Premier League’s top defenders, and Spurs are reportedly demanding a transfer fee of as much as £50-60m for the centre-half.
Football consultant McGarry feels that the fee is a little bit too much for a defender with not too long left on his current contract, although he does concede that talent in that area of the pitch is difficult to come by.
Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, transfer insider McGarry said: “Spurs are asking £50-60m for Alderweireld with one year left on his contract. It is a little bit excessive.
“At the same time, he was one of the best three defenders in the Premier League in the past two seasons.”
Manchester United are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Mourinho looks to assemble a squad capable of winning the title next season.
The Red Devils finished in second place and without a trophy last season in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge.
They have already completed two signings this summer after having wrapped up deals for both Diogo Dalot and Fred.
