Naby Keita discusses Liverpool FC meeting with Steven Gerrard
The new Liverpool signing was thrilled to receive the number eight shirt from Steven Gerrard
Naby Keita has revealed that Steven Gerrard personally presented the African midfielder with the number eight shirt at Liverpool FC.
The Guinea international completed a move to the Reds in a £48m deal from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.
Keita has been waiting for the past 12 months to link up with his Liverpool FC team-mates after the Reds settled on a £48m transfer fee but agreed to wait until the 2018 summer transfer window to bring the African star to Anfield.
The box-to-box midfielder scored nine times and made seven assists in 39 games in all competitions last season to continue his impressive form in the German top flight.
The 23-year-old will be tasked with improving Jurgen Klopp’s options in the middle of the park as Liverpool FC look for Keita to become Gerrard’s long-term successor.
Speaking to Liverpool FC’s website about his move to the Merseyside outfit, Keita revealed that Gerrard presented the Guinea star with the number eight shirt.
“It was an incredible day for me. He gave me the No.8 jersey,” Keita told Liverpool FC’s website. “When it happened, it was a surprise and I didn’t expect it.
“When he came in, I looked at him and said, ‘wow’ because he is a legend. He is somebody who always showed respect, who gave his all on the pitch, somebody who is loved here.
“If somebody like that gives you his shirt number, it’s not to play around with, it is to try and do as much as he did – that’s my motivation.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to ensure their continued participation in the Champions League.
The Reds lost 3-1 to La Liga side Real Madrid in the Champions League final last term.
