Unai Emery explains reason for Arsenal’s latest signing
Unai Emery expresses his delight at seeing Arsenal tie up a move to sign Matteo Guendouzi
Unai Emery has expressed his delight at seeing Arsenal complete a deal to sign Matteo Guendouzi from Ligue 2 side Lorient this week.
The 19-year-old became the north London side’s fourth signing of the summer on Wednesday after he completed his move to The Emirates to link up with Emery’s new-look squad.
Reports emerged linking Guendouzi with a move to Arsenal last week and the north London side completed the signing of the 19-year-old for an undisclosed fee and on a long-term contract on Wednesday.
Now, Arsenal manager Emery has claimed that the Gunners had to fight off competition from a number of top clubs to secure the signing this week.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Emery said: “We are delighted Matteo is joining us. He is a talented young player and a lot of clubs were interested in him.
“He has big potential and gained good first-team experience last season with Lorient. He wants to learn and improve and will be an important part of our first-team squad.”
Emery has been appointed as Arsenal’s new manager after Arsene Wenger opted to call time on his 22 years at the north London club at the end of last season.
The Gunners have not won the Premier League title since 2004 and they ended last season in sixth place and without a trophy.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that their side will at least be able to challenge for a place in the top four in Emery’s first campaign in charge next season.
