Gary Neville raves about midfielder strongly linked with Arsenal
Gary Neville singles out Lucas Torreira for special praise after Uruguay's win over Portugal
Gary Neville singled out Lucas Torreira for special praise after Uruguay set up a World Cup quarter-final against France.
The 22-year-old, who has been strongly linked with Arsenal over the last few weeks, played the full 90 minutes as Uruguay booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Portugal in the last 16.
Torreira has been strongly linked with a move to The Emirates in recent days as new Arsenal boss Unai Emery looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.
And former Manchester United defender Neville was extremely impressed by what he saw from Torreira during the clash with Portugal on Saturday night.
Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, Neville said: “The two centre-backs played well against Cristiano Ronaldo tonight but everything that came into that box they had to clear.
“They will have to do that against France. Torreira, the defensive midfielder, he gets back in every time. I don’t know how many times, but he’s always there to clear it.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal confirmed their second signing of the summer last month when they announced a deal to bring goalkeeper Bernd Leno to the club from Bayer Leverkusen.
The north London side are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as they look to assemble a team capable of at least breaking back into the top four next season.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
