Arsene Wenger reacts to Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s World Cup displays
Arsene Wenger has his say on Mesut Ozil's displays for Germany at the World Cup in Russia
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he was disappointed by Mesut Ozil’s performances for Germany at the World Cup this summer.
The 29-year-old playmaker came in for plenty of criticism for failing to produce consistent displays for both club and country recently.
Ozil was not on his best form as holders Germany were dumped out of the tournament in Russia in the group stage.
The Arsenal playmaker has been regularly criticised for failing to produce consistent performances for the north London side over the last few seasons.
And Wenger, who brought Ozil to Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013, has admitted that he was disappointed by the Germany playmaker’s below-par performances in Russia.
Speaking in an interview with beIN Sports, Wenger said: “They have been vilified in Germany. Ozil is a guy who needs support, he doesn’t need controversy.
“When I watched him play, I could feel that there were situations in the game where he could have moved forward, progressed more vertically. But he played safely.
“I always was thinking come on, that’s not the real Ozil I know, the guy who can kill.
“He did play alright, but I think he didn’t play with the complete freedom, he played a little bit with the handbrake on at this World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal will be looking to at least break back into the top four next season as they prepare for their first campaign under new manager Unai Emery.
The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their unbeaten triumph in 2004, and they ended last season without a trophy when they finished in sixth place and missed out on Champions League qualification last term.
Emery will be looking to at least steer Arsenal back into the top four next season.
