Robert Pires: This is Arsenal’s best signing this summer
Robert Pires has his say on Arsenal's decision to appoint Unai Emery as the club's new manager
Robert Pires has described Arsenal’s appointment of Unai Emery as their best signing of the summer transfer window.
The Spanish manager was confirmed as the club’s new boss back in May after Arsene Wenger opted to call time on his 22-year spell at Arsenal at the end of last season.
Emery has already made five new signings this summer as he looks to revamp his squad ahead of his first campaign in charge of the club.
The Gunners have brought in Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Stephan Lichtsteiner and goalkeeper Bernd Leno so far this summer.
Emery has been tasked with at least steering Arsenal back into the top four for next season after the Gunners finished in a disappointing sixth place and without a trophy last term.
And former Arsenal midfielder Pires has backed the Gunners’ appointment of Emery as their new boss ahead of next season.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports News, Pires said: “The best signing for me is Unai Emery, the manager. Of course I believe in the players, and especially the new players.
“But for Emery it’s very important to start very well. He knows he’s at a big club, and has a lot of pressure, but I think he has a big character and spirit.
“He won in Spain. He won in France. He has a lot of experience and I hope for him and Arsenal that he is successful with the club.”
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign under Wenger.
The north London side will be looking to at least break back into the top four next term under Emery.
