New Arsenal signing reveals his best attributes
Sokratis Papastathopoulos insists that his number one priority is strengthening Arsenal's defence
Sokratis Papastathopoulos has insisted that his number one priority for Arsenal is to strengthen their defensive performances.
The Greek defender signed a long-term contract with the Gunners on Monday as he became the north London side’s third signing of the summer transfer window.
The 30-year-old has been brought in by new manager Unai Emery to help shore up Arsenal’s defence as they look to at least try and break back into the top four next season.
Arsenal’s defence has been criticised heavily over the last few seasons for their inconsistent displays at the back.
And the Greece international has admitted that his top priority is to make sure that the Gunners step up their defensive displays in the coming seasons.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website, Papastathopoulos said: “I think that a defender first has to defend, to protect the goal, and then after if he can help in front a little bit for the game, then it’s good. But first of all, he has to defend.”
Arsenal are still believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as they look to try and build a team capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
The Gunners finished in sixth place in the table last term and without a trophy in what was Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge at the north London club.
