Unai Emery believed that Lucas Torreira could end up being a “very important” signing for Arsenal this summer.

The Uruguay international completed his move to the north London club from Sampdoria this month as Emery continues to strengthen his squad at The Emirates ahead of next season.

Torreira is now on his summer holidays and he will report back to London Colney to begin pre-season training in the next few weeks following his involvement in the World Cup with Uruguay in Russia.

Emery was quizzed about his decision to bring Torreira to The Emirates in his first official news conference as Arsenal boss last week.

And the new Arsenal manager outlined why he thinks that the 22-year-old midfielder could end up being an extremely important player for the north London side.

Emery is quoted as saying by Metro: “He is a very young player but his career is interesting in Italy and in the World Cup he improved very quickly.

“I think for us, this midfielder is very important and he is coming with ambition to get better here and to improve with us.”

Arsenal will be looking to at least break back into the top four next season as they bid to try qualify for the Champions League.

The north London side finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and without a trophy in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge of the club.

The Gunners have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph in 2004.
