Why new Arsenal signing wanted No19 shirt – report
Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno will wear the number 19 shirt next season
Bernd Leno opted to go for the No19 shirt instead of the number one jersey because the new Arsenal signing made his debut for Bayer Leverkusen at 19, according to a report.
The Gunners announced that Leno would wear number 19 on Monday to the surprise of some Arsenal supporters on social media.
Leno completed a £20m move to Arsenal from Leverkusen in the 2018 summer transfer window to provide Petr Cech and David Ospina with competition for a starting spot.
The Germany international will be hoping to usurp Cech as Unai Emery’s number one goalkeeper following his big money summer move.
Arsenal’s most expensive goalkeeper in their history could make his debut against Premier League champions Manchester City in their season opener.
Metro is reporting that Leno has opted to don the number 19 shirt because he made his debut for Leverkusen at the age of 19.
The number became available after Spain international Santi Cazorla left the Gunners earlier in the summer transfer window.
England international Jack Wilshere and Premier League winner Gilberto Silva have also been previous occupants of the No19 shirt.
Arsenal finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot.
