Unai Emery welcomes new Arsenal deal for 23-year-old defender
The new Arsenal manager is delighted to tie down Calum Chambers to a contract extensio
Unai Emery has welcomed Calum Chamber’s contract extension at Arsenal.
The Gunners defender put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the north London side on Tuesday to end speculation surrounding his future.
The 23-year-old becomes the second Arsenal player to commit his future to the Emirates Stadium outfit since Emery’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.
Chambers has struggled to justify his transfer fee since Wenger signed the England international in a £16m deal from Southampton in 2014.
The Arsenal defender has often struggled with nerves and has been guilty of some erratic performances in the Gunners team under the French head coach.
However, Emery clearly sees potential in the former Saints defender given the Gunners have seen fit to hand Chambers a contract extension.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website about Chambers’ new deal, Emery said:
“I’m delighted Calum has extended his stay with us. He played an important role last season and will be part of my plans this season.”
Arsenal started their summer transfer activity with the addition of experienced Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus last month.
The Gunners spent £20m on Germany international Bernd Leno to sign the shot stopper from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos became the third summer signing on Monday evening after Arsenal signed the 29-year-old from Borussia Dortmund.
