Arsenal are in talks to sign Steven Nzonzi from Sevilla this summer but they may have to sell to fund a move
Arsenal are in talks with Sevilla about signing Steven Nzonzi but the Gunners will likely have to sell to fund a move for the Frenchman, sources have told The Sport Review.
The Gunners are keen on a move to bring the 29-year-old to The Emirates this summer and have held talks with the Spanish club in recent days, The Sport Review has learned.
However, because Nzonzi is likely to command a transfer fee of at least £20m, the north London side are likely to be forced to offload some players to free up funds before making their move.
The north London club have been busy in the summer transfer window so far after having brought in Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi following Unai Emery’s appointment at The Emirates.
Nzonzi, who was coached by Emery during the manager’s final season at the Spanish club, has made 136 appearances for Sevilla since his transfer to the La Liga side from Stoke City back in 2015.
He has been touted as a target for the north London club for some time, and the Gunners have made official enquiries to Sevilla about his availability this month.
Emery, who was appointed as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates back in May, remained coy when quizzed about the speculation linking the Gunners with a move to sign Nzonzi.
“I know him but we haven’t made a move for him,” Emery told a news conference last week when asked directly about the possibility of Nzonzi moving to The Emirates this summer.
Nzonzi scored one goal and made two assists in 27 La Liga outings for Sevilla last season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will begin their Premier League campaign with a home clash against defending champions Manchester City on 12 August.
