New Arsenal signing reveals Aubameyang influence in transfer
Sokratis Papastathopoulos says he spoke with both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan before completing his transfer to Arsenal
Sokratis Papastathopoulos has revealed that he spoke with both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan before completing his transfer to Arsenal on Monday.
The 30-year-old Greek defender was finally confirmed as Arsenal’s third signing of the summer transfer window this week after months of speculation linking him with a move to The Emirates.
Papastathopoulos has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners for an undisclosed fee after opting to leave Borussia Dortmund and join his former team-mates Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan in north London.
Now, the defender has admitted that he spoke to both Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan in recent weeks about a possible move to Arsenal, after the pair joined the north London club in the January transfer window.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website, Papastathopoulos said: “I spoke [to them] a lot times.
“They said to me the best things about this club, that it is one big family and of course they also called me not every day but a lot of times telling me to come here.”
Arsenal will be aiming to at least break back into the top four next season after they finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and missed out on Champions League qualification last term.
New manager Unai Emery has been tasked with steering the north London side back to the top of English football, with the Gunners not having won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph back in 2004.
