Raphael Honigstein: What I really think about Sokratis’ proposed move to Arsenal
The Bundesliga expert discusses Sokratis Papastathopoulos proposed move to Arsenal in the current transfer window
Sokratis Papastathopoulos would be a decent addition to the Arsenal team, according to Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein.
Arsenal ended up in sixth spot in the Premier League last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive campaign.
Long-serving manager Arsene Wenger stood down after 22 seasons in charge of the north London side at the end of the disappointing season.
Arsenal have turned to experienced Unai Emery as Wenger’s replacement ahead of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign.
Emery has already set about adding experience to his squad following the addition of Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Arsenal have also been linked with a potential deal to sign experienced Dortmund centre-half Sokratis, with the transfer tipped to go through on 1 July.
German football expert Honigstein believes Sokratis would be a good addition to the Arsenal team.
“He is pretty decent,” Honigstein told ESPN FC. “He won’t leave a huge void in terms of the fans affection.
“He is a warrior but not so great on the ball. He is tidy and energetic. He is tough in the tackle. I am not sure he will take the Arsenal team to the next level. It is a little underwhelming.”
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley last term.
The Gunners are set to release versatile midfielder Jack Wilshere in the current transfer window.
