Guillem Balague claims Arsenal were in talks to sign PSG star
Guillem Balague claims Arsenal were close to signing Kylian Mbappe two years ago
Arsenal were in talks to sign Kylian Mbappe two years ago but changed their mind at the last minute, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
Mbappe earned large amounts of praise for his strong performance for France on Saturday as he scored two goals to help fire his country into the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a 4-3 win over Argentina.
The talented 19-year-old moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Monaco last summer and he is widely considered to be one of the top young attacking talents in European football.
Now, Spanish football expert Balague has claimed that Arsenal were close to concluding a deal to sign Mbappe a couple of years ago, but the proposed transfer fell through when his representatives demanded £7m to get the deal over the line.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Balague said: “At 17 there were a lot of teams interested in him – one of those was Arsenal,” Balague said on his YouTube channel.
“But his family and the agents asked for £7m.
“For a 17-year-old, Arsenal decided not to continue the conversation because there’s always a risk.”
Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as they look to assemble a squad capable of challenging for a top-four finish next season.
The north London side are having to make do without Champions League football next term after they finished in sixth place and without a trophy in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge at the club last season.
