Jurgen Klopp discusses where new Liverpool FC signing Naby Keita will play
The Liverpool FC manager discusses whether Naby Keita will start in the Reds team
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he considers new Liverpool FC signing Naby Keita’s best position to be as an eight but admitted the African could be used in a number of different positions.
The Guinea international completed a £48m move to Liverpool FC from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig earlier this month after the Merseyside outfit settled on a transfer fee last summer.
Keita has taken on the number eight shirt to follow in the footsteps of Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard, who left the Anfield outfit in 2015.
Liverpool FC supporters will be hoping the former Red Bull Salzburg star can help to fill Emre Can’s void in the Reds team after the German midfielder’s move to Serie A champions Juventus.
Keita impressed in Liverpool FC’s 3-1 loss to Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup in United States at the weekend.
Quizzed about the African star’s best position, Klopp told his post-match media conference:
“We got him because he is the player he is and now we want to work with that.
“That means first of all we let him go and adapt to our system.
“I see him as an ‘8’, he can play ’10’ as well, maybe in the future he can play ‘6’ as well.
“At Leipzig, he played as a winger, that’s for sure not his best position but he can play it because he has the speed for it, he has the football intelligence for it.
“We see him as a creative No 8 playing the passes and making the runs with the ball.”
Liverpool FC have also signed Brazil international Fabinho in a £39m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco last summer.
The Reds have also snapped up Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri in a £13.5m deal from relegated Stoke City.
Liverpool FC have spent a world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper on Brazil number one Alisson Becker.
