The Liverpool FC legend warns Jurgen Klopp about how important the 2018-19 season is for the Reds
Phil Thompson has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool FC are facing a massive season.
The Reds have progressed under the German head coach since his appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor in October 2015.
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure their place in the Champions League next term.
Klopp has led Liverpool FC to consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Spanish head coach Rafael Benitez was in charge.
The Merseyside outfit managed to beat Portuguese side FC Porto, Premier League rivals Manchester City and Serie A giants in the knockout stage.
The Reds lost 3-1 to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev to end the season without any silverware.
Liverpool FC will be hoping to close the gap on English champions Manchester City in next season’s Premier League title race.
Former Liverpool FC captain Thompson warned Klopp that the Reds need to keep progressing next term.
“This is going to be a massive season for Liverpool, for Jurgen Klopp, for his team after the improvement this side has shown,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“Manchester City really ran away with the Premier League but I would like to see and really believe that Liverpool can push strongly for it.”
Klopp has led Liverpool FC to three finals since he took over the reins from Northern Irish head coach Rodgers in 2015.
Liverpool FC lost to Manchester City on penalties in the League Cup at Wembley in February 2016.
A few months later, the Reds squandered a 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 to Spanish side Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel.
