Agent of reported Liverpool FC and Arsenal target delivers update
Gelson Martins' agent rules out the possibility of his client signing for Benfice this summer
Gelson Martins’ agent has ruled out a move to Benfica for his client this summer.
The 23-year-old Portugal international is a free agent after he terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon due to safety concerns.
A number of Sporting Lisbon players were attacked at the club’s training ground last season and Martins is one of a number of players to have quit the club as a result.
According to a report in Metro, Martins has been touted as a possible target for both Liverpool FC and Arsenal over the last few months as both clubs look to bolster their options ahead of next season.
And the player’s agent has now officially ruled out the possibility of Martins moving to Portuguese club Benfica this summer.
Agent Ulisses Santos wrote on Facebook: “Being the agent of Gelson Martins, I have as a top priority his tranquility, and maximum concentration to be able to do what he knows, professional football.
“For this reason, and considering the sports media agenda has been very busy around his future, I come to inform you that Martins’ next club will not be SL Benfica.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal confirmed their third signing of the summer on Monday after tying up a deal to bring Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos to The Emirates from Borussia Dortmund.
The Gunners are still believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as they look to assemble a squad at least capable of breaking back into the top four next season.
