Jurgen Klopp admits that he is a long-term admirer of Xherdan Shaqiri after he signed for Liverpool FC
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is a long-term admirer of Xherdan Shaqiri after the Switzerland international signed for the Reds on Friday night.
The 26-year-old became Liverpool FC’s latest signing as Klopp continues to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
Shaqiri will be hoping to link up with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in Liverpool FC’s attacking line-up next season as he bids to try and help the Reds challenge for the Premier League title.
Liverpool FC ended up in fourth place in the table last term and they moved to sign Shaqiri from Stoke after the Potters were relegated from the Premier League.
And Klopp has now revealed that he has been a keen admirer of the attacker for some time.
Speaking in an interview with Liverpool FC’s website, Klopp said: “I know him well from his time in Switzerland and especially Germany – I have been a long-time admirer.
“But the added bonus now is that he knows the Premier League and what it takes to perform in this uniquely intense environment. He also did really well at the World Cup – so he comes to us full of belief and confidence.
“Xherdan the person will fit in perfectly at Liverpool I believe. He has personality and drive – he is someone who will feed off the positive emotion of our crowd.
“He joins a dressing room of really good lads and I know they will welcome him with open arms and help him settle and integrate quickly.”
Liverpool FC have also brought in Fabinho and Naby Keita this summer as they look to try and challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Reds finished fourth and without a trophy last term after they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final back in May.
Liverpool FC are still looking to win their first major trophy under Klopp following his appointment back in 2015.
