Jurgen Klopp delivers Liverpool FC injury update after Dortmund loss
Jurgen Klopp delivers the latest news on Joel Matip after he picked up an injury in Liverpool FC's loss to Borussia Dortmund
Jurgen Klopp has admitted his disappointment after Joel Matip picked up an injury during Liverpool FC’s 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.
The defender was forced off after just 22 minutes of the pre-season tie following his return to action from a long-term injury problem.
Klopp revealed that the fresh injury setback was a different issue to the problem that had cut short his season last term and which required surgery.
The Liverpool FC boss said that it looked as if Matip had suffered a small muscular tear, and it is not yet clear how long he will be out of action for.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, Klopp said: “It’s not the same injury. It’s another muscle – it looks like, hopefully, only a little tear.
“We will see, but we cannot say any more about it now. It is, of course, the most negative thing about the day. It’s not cool. Things like this can happen, but you don’t want them to.
“Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will know more, but in this moment we only know that it was too painful for him to carry on.”
Liverpool FC will be looking to challenge for the Premier League title next season as they look to try and win their first major trophy under Klopp since his appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.
The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season after they reached the Champions League final but ended up losing to Real Madrid.
Liverpool FC have signed Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker so far this summer as Klopp looks to guide his team to a trophy next season.
