Didier Drogba: This Man United star is perfectionist
The Chelsea FC legend lavishes praise on Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku
Didier Drogba has described Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku as a “perfectionist”.
The Red Devils striker has impressed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia so far following four goals in two games ahead of their round of 26 clash against Japan on Monday night.
Lukaku has embraced the big stage despite criticism of his mentality in the past to trail England star Harry Kane in the goal-scoring charts.
The Belgium international netted 27 times in 52 games in all competitions during his first season at the Manchester outfit.
Lukaku scored 16 goals in 34 games in the Premier League, while he found the net five times in both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
The 24-year-old was team-mates with Drogba at Chelsea FC before loan spells at West Brom and Everton before he made the switch to the Toffees permanent.
The former Chelsea FC striker outlined what makes Lukaku such a good striker.
“Of course, Belgium are creating lots of chances for him – if you have Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Dries Mertens behind you, then as a striker you know they will provide food for you,” Drogba told BBC Sport.
“But the rest is down to him. I had service like that at Chelsea, and I always thought to myself: ‘If you don’t eat well now, then you are the one responsible.’
“What I mean by that is if you have got people delivering good balls to you then if you miss it is your fault – and that is the mentality Romelu has got too.
“As we have seen, he is not missing now – he has scored four goals from five shots in the two games he has played so far – and I would put that down to the fact that, as a player, he is a perfectionist.
“If you have a desire to always improve like he does, then in the end it pays off.”
Lukaku moved to Manchester United in a £75m deal from Everton in the 2017 summer transfer window to bolster the Red Devils’ attacking options.
Manchester United managed to secure Lukaku’s signature despite the Belgian forward being linked with a potential switch to his former club Chelsea FC.
