The goalkeeper made the headlines for the wrong reasons at the start of the World Cup when an uncharacteristic error allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to score during the 3-3 draw with Portugal last month.
De Gea is widely regarded to be one of the finest goalkeepers in European football, and he has been earning plenty of praise for his performances for Manchester United in recent seasons.
The shot-stopper has regularly been touted as a possible target for Real Madrid in recent years, although the player himself has always insisted that he is happy at Old Trafford.
Now, Argentina legend Maradona has insisted that he is a keen admirer of De Gea and hopes that he can bounce back from his difficult World Cup.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Maradona said: “Yes, I like him, although he’s conceded a couple of goals. We all saw the mistake, but since I’ve seen him join Manchester United, he’s had a very good career.
“He’s done well to ensure that Sergio Romero is always a substitute, his position is never in doubt.
“He’s started this World Cup in a negative way, but I hope he finishes strongly because he deserves it.
“I’ve met him with [Sergio] Aguero when they were at Atletico Madrid and people in Spain need to be patient with him.”
Manchester United will be looking to try and challenge for the Premier League title next season in what will be Jose Mourinho’s third campaign in charge.
The Red Devils ended up in second place in the table last term and without a trophy.
