Manchester United have eight centre-halves on their transfer shortlist for defenders this summer as they look to bolster their options at the back, according to reports in the British regional media.

The Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Red Devils have a number of top targets for the centre-half position this summer as they look to assemble a squad capable of winning the title next season.

Among the names quoted by the report are Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.

However, the same report goes on to say that Manchester United have accepted that they will likely have to shell out a club record fee for a defender if they are to land any of their targets this summer.

The same story says that the Red Devils are looking for a defender aged between 23 and 29 as they look to add to their options at the back.

Manchester United have so far made three signings this summer, after having tied up deals for Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.

The Red Devils will be aiming to challenge for the Premier League title next season as they look to bounce back from their trophyless campaign last term.
