Didier Drogha has spoken of his pride at seeing Belgium and Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku blossom into one of the world’s best strikers.

The Belgian forward has helped the Red Devils to reach the World Cup knockout stage thanks to his performances in the group stage.

Lukaku scored in victories over Tunisia and Panama to help Belgium top their group ahead of England in Russia.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a successful first season at Manchester United following his £75m switch to Old Trafford from Everton last summer.

Lukaku had the chance to return to Chelsea FC but the powerful striker opted to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The former Anderlecht star netted 16 goals in 34 Premier League games, while Lukaku netted 10 times in the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Former Chelsea FC striker Drogba, who was Lukaku’s idol as a boy, has heaped praise on the Beglium striker ahead of his round of 16 clash against Japan.

“When I look at what Romelu Lukaku is doing at this World Cup, I am so proud,” Drogba told BBC Sport.

“Romelu is a player and person I have a special relationship with. I have known him for seven years, since he first came to Chelsea at the age of 18 in 2011, and we are really close.

“He is more than my very good friend, he is a kid I love and he is like my younger brother – someone I have always tried to help.”

Lukaku netted 27 goals in 51 games in all competitions during his first season at Manchester United.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Lukaku’s former club Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final following Eden Hazard’s winner from the penalty spot.
