Manchester United are interested in a deal to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, according to reporter Mark Ogden.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move to sign a central midfielder this summer following Michael Carrick’s retirement.

The 20-time English champions have already recruited Brazil international Fred in a £52m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, Mourinho will be keen to add more depth to his options given the inconsistency of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini last term.

Manchester United have been linked with a potential swoop to sign Croatia stars Ante Rebic and Mateo Kovacic.

However, ESPN reporter Ogden suggested that Manchester United could look at Bayern and Spain midfielder Thiago as a potential signing.

“Man United want a number 10,” Ogden told ESPN FC.

“He is not going to get Coutinho or Hazard or Silva. He needs someone of that calibre.

“He is looking at Bayern midfielder Thiago Alcantara.”

Thiago has scored 25 goals in 121 games in all competitions since his move to Bayern from FC Barcelona in 2013.

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last season to finish above Spurs and Liverpool FC.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley last season.
