Manchester United are ready to switch their focus to Toni Kroos after giving up on signing his Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale, according to a report in Spain.

Spanish media outlet AS, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that Manchester United have called time on their pursuit of the Wales international.

The same article states that Jose Mourinho is keen to add experienced Germany international Kroos to the Red Devils squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

According to the same story, Manchester United are worried about Kroos’ transfer fee given the World Cup winner has a £446m (€500m) release clause in his current Real Madrid contract.

AS add that Kroos is Mourinho’s number one target after the Red Devils were left frustrated in their pursuit of former Tottenham Hotspur winger Bale.

Indeed, the Welsh forward looks set to remain at Real Madrid following Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Serie A champions Juventus.

Mourinho has signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant this summer.

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last season to finish above Spurs and Liverpool FC.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley last season.
