Paul Merson has admitted his surprise that Aaron Ramsey remained at Arsenal beyond the summer transfer window.

The Wales international has less than 12 months to run on his current deal with the north London side.

Ramsey could leave the Gunners on a free transfer at the end of the Premier League campaign.

The 27-year-old has been linked with Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC over the past few months.

The Welsh star is currently on a contract worth around £100,000 a week but Ramsey is thought to be keen to double his wages.

Spanish head coach Unai Emery took over the reins from Arsene Wenger at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League season.

Arsenal have lost their opening two Premier League games following losses to defending champions Manchester City and derby rivals Chelsea FC.

Former Gunners star Merson admitted that he was surprised Ramsey remained at Arsenal beyond the summer transfer window.

“I am shocked he is still there,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He should just sign now. I thought Chelsea might come in for him. But Arsenal is a massive football club. ‘He plays every week for Arsenal. He could go elsewhere and might only play 15 games every season.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title in the 2003-04 season when the Gunners finished the campaign unbeaten.

The north London side lost 2-0 to Manchester City in their season opener at the Emirates Stadium before a 3-2 defeat by Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
