Martin Keown believes Arsenal are capable of playing out from the back under Gunners boss Unai Emery.

The north London side lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City following goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva at The Emirates.

Arsenal struggled to adapt Emery’s style in their Premier League opener as veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech struggled to build the play from the back as seemingly instructed.

The Gunners are looking to change their philosophy under Emery after the Spanish head coach replace Arsene Wenger following 22 seasons in charge of Arsenal.

However, former Arsenal defender Keown believes the Gunners are capable of playing out from the back despite an uncomfortable 90 minutes in the Premier League last weekend.

“Of course they can. Playing out from the back is nothing new for Arsenal.

“Arsene Wenger’s brand of football was all about passing from the back,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“The problem for Arsenal against Manchester City was that they kept passing out when the better option would have been to go long.

“Pep Guardiola wants his goalkeepers to use their feet but Ederson will sometimes hit diagonal balls to wide players.

“At times, the Arsenal crowd could sense that the pass was not on for Cech and urged him to go long.

“Against Chelsea on Saturday, Cech needs to be more flexible in his decision-making.”

Arsenal signed experienced Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus.

The Gunners have also brought in Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno in a £22m deal to rival Cech and Colombia international David Ospina.

The north London outfit have also brought on Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

Uruguay international Lucas Torreira became the fourth addition at The Emirates last week before Lorient teenager Matteo Guendouzi finalised a move.
