Unai Emery sent stern Arsenal warning about Mesut Ozil
The former Irish defender warns Unai Emery about Arsenal's problem with Mesut Ozil
Arsenal are facing a big problem with Mesut Ozil, Kevin Kilbane has warned Unai Emery.
The Germany international signed a new long-term contract with the north London side back in February to end transfer speculation surrounding his future.
Ozil became the best paid player in Arsenal’s history after the attacking midfielder put pen to paper on a contract thought to be worth around £350,000 a week.
The Arsenal star struggled during the World Cup and the 29-year-old was used as a scapegoat at Germany crashed out at the group stage following losses to Mexico and South Korea.
Ozil has since announced his international retirement in controversial circumstances, focusing his energy on club football.
However, the number 10 struggled to have an impact on Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City in their opening Premier League fixture last weekend.
Former Irish defender Kilbane believes Ozil could struggle to justify his mammoth wages under Emery.
“It was a worry with Ozil,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He looked way off it. Mentally where is he at? He signed a new contract. He is the highest paid player in Arsenal’s history.
“I don’t think he has consistently being played well enough for a long time now.”
Arsenal signed five players in the summer transfer window to revamp their squad under Emery following his appointment back in May.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Wenger’s men finished the campaign unbeaten.
