Martin Keown: What I really think about new Arsenal signing Sokratis
The Arsenal legend delivers his verdict on new signing Sokartis Papastathopoulos
Martin Keown has admitted that he wasn’t overly impressed with Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ debut performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
The Gunners signed Sokratis in a £22m deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the 2018 summer transfer window to improve Unai Emery’s defensive options.
Sokratis arrived at Arsenal with a wealth of experience in the German top flight following his stints at Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund before a move to England.
The Greece international made his Gunners debut in a 2-0 loss to Manchester City as Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva sealed three points for the defending Premier League champions.
England international Calum Chambers was sent out on loan to Fulham before the close of the transfer window.
Former Arsenal star Keown doesn’t believe Sokratis is much better than Chambers.
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League place in successive seasons.
The Gunners signed five players in the summer transfer window to revamp their squad under Emery following his appointment back in May.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the Gunners finished the season unbeaten.
