Martin Keown claims Unai Emery doesn’t trust Arsenal star
The Arsenal legend assesses Granit Xhaka's current situation at the north London side
Martin Keown has hinted that Arsenal manager Unai Emery doesn’t trust Granit Xhaka.
The Gunners are under new management this season after Emery replaced Arsene Wenger.
Xhaka was signed by the Frenchman but the Switzerland international has struggled to perform under Wenger.
Arsenal handed Xhaka a new long-term contract in the summer to suggest that Emery believes the Swiss star has a future.
Xhaka has started both of their Premier League games so far following losses to Chelsea FC and Manchester City.
Emery has also signed French teenager Matteo Guendouzi and Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira in the summer transfer window.
Former Arsenal star Keown has questioned whether Emery fully trusts Xhaka in the Gunners team.
“What I found strange in the Chelsea game was that Arsenal’s midfield had Matteo Guendouzi — who is right footed — playing on the left with the left-footed Xhaka on the right,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Had Xhaka played on the left, he would have been up against N’Golo Kante. Did Emery feel that Xhaka was not able to deal with the demands of Kante defensively?”
Xhaka completed 90 minutes of their 3-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Arsenal finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Wenger’s side finished the season unbeaten.
