Lucas Torreira has revealed that one of the reasons he picked the number 11 shirt at Arsenal is so that he would be able to sit next to Mesut Ozil in the dressing room.

Torreira is currently getting to grips with life at Arsenal after signing for the north London side from Sampdoria earlier this summer as one of Unai Emery’s first recruits.

The Argentina international picked the number 11 shirt as his first choice of 34 was already taken by Granit Xhaka.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Arsenal next season as he bids to enjoy a successful first campaign at The Emirates.

And Torreira has now revealed why he chose the number 11 shirt for his first campaign at The Emirates.

Speaking in an interview with Sport 890, Torreira said: “I wanted to pick 34 but It was already taken by [Granit] Xhaka.

“I chose 11 because it’s the day of my birthday and I will get the chance to sit next to Mesut Ozil in the dressing room.

“It’s incredible when you go to the dressing room and see your locker is glued to that of Mesut Ozil who is a World Champion and a player with a fantastic career.”

Torreira will be hoping to help Arsenal to break back into the top four next season after they finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and without a trophy.

Emery is the man who has been tasked with steering the Gunners back into the Champions League spots after Arsene Wenger stood down at the end of last season.
