Gary Neville sends blunt warning to Mesut Ozil at Arsenal
Gary Neville warns Mesut Ozil that he must adapt to Unai Emery's style of play at Arsenal or risk being dropped
Gary Neville has warned Mesut Ozil that he must adapt to Unai Emery’s style of play at Arsenal or risk being dropped by the new Gunners boss.
Ozil has regularly been criticised for failing to produce consistent performances for the north London side since his move to the club from Real Madrid back in 2013.
The 29-year-old playmaker has started both of Arsenal’s games so far in the Premier League this season but has been unable to prevent the Gunners from slipping to back to back defeats by Manchester City and Chelsea FC.
The German will be hoping to impress new manager Emery in the coming weeks as he looks to establish himself as one of the main parts of the Arsenal team moving forwards.
And Neville has warned the former Real Madrid start that he will have to start taking his performances to the next level if he wants to hold down a regular spot in the Gunners team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “Mesut Ozil, he can’t press from the front, so he’s basically got to give him an opportunity, give him enough rope to see what he’s going to do with it.
“The reality of it is he said to Mesut Ozil in the lead up to the second game you’ve got to work harder. That’s the first time I’ve publicly heard anyone call Mesut Ozil out and that’s after one game.
“Second game he hooks him and subs him. He’s working him out. He’s saying if you don’t want to press, if you don’t want to do whay I’m saying you’ll be out of the team. He’s working out those players.
“The last thing he should do in my opinion with my experience, which was a bad one, is adapt and change because the players will walk all over him.”
Ozil will be hoping to start for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home clash against West Ham United at The Emirates.
