Ian Wright has heaped praise on Matteo Guendouzi for his Arsenal debut despite Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City.
The Gunners signed the teenager from Ligue 1 side Lorient despite the midfielder’s lack of top flight experience.
Guendouzi was named in the Arsenal starting line up for the visit of the defending Premier League champions Manchester City.
The 19-year-old started the Premier League opener ahead of £26m summer signing Lucas Torreira despite the Uruguay international’s impressive World Cup performance.
The French teenager made a number of mistakes but the summer signing showed a willingess to get on the ball and didn’t shirk from his reponsibilities.
Former Arsenal striker Wright named what impressed him about Guendouzi’s performance against the defending champions.
“Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence,” Wright told The Sun.
“It would have been easy to hide — let’s face it, others in the Arsenal side did — but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.”
Arsenal signed Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer after the the Swiss star saw his contract expire at the end of the 2017-18 season.
The Gunners bolstered their goalkeeper depth with the addition of Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno in a £22m.
Torreira arrived from Sampdoria days after Borussia Dortmund centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulous secured a move to Arsenal.
The Gunners will make the trip to London rivals Chelsea FC in their next Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
