Steve Nicol has ruled out Arsenal finishing in the top four in the Premier League next season.

Unai Emery took over the reins of the north London club from Arsene Wenger at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

The new Arsenal manager brought in Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner in a free transfer from Juventus.

The north London side snapped up Bayer Leverkusen and Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the current transfer window.

Arsenal improved their defence with Borussia Dortmund centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos to bolster Arsene Wenger’s back four.

World Cup star Lucas Torreira was the fourth player to move to the Gunners in a big money deal this summer.

Emery landed his fifth player in the shape of French teenager Matteo Guendouzi to plan for the future.

Former Liverpool FC defender Nicol doesn’t expect Arsenal to secure a return to the Champions League.

“Success would be getting in the top four,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“The squad they have right now isn’t close to any of the teams who will get in the top four.”

The Gunners have signed five players in the summer transfer window to bolster Emery’s options under Wenger.

The north London side lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final last term.
