Ian Wright sends Arsenal transfer advice to Unai Emery
The Arsenal legend believes Unai Emery needs to sign some players to suit his style
Ian Wright has urged Unai Emery to bring more players to Arsenal who suit his style in the January transfer window.
The former Sevilla manager took over the reins of the north London club from Arsene Wenger at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League season.
Emery has been tasked with leading the Gunners to a top-four finish for the first time in two campaigns.
Arsenal signed Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno, Borussia Dortmund centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Sampdoria star Lucas Torreira and Lorient teenager Matteo Guendouzi.
The Gunners lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City in their season opener at The Emirates before a narrow 3-2 defeat by Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The new Arsenal boss has inherited some players who don’t suit his style given his desire for the Gunners to press from the front.
In particular, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggled to fulfill their defensive obligations during the opening two Premier League games.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes the Gunners will need more signings in the January transfer window.
Wright told Sky Sports: “It’s going to be a massive problem for him because I don’t know if he’s going to get the kind of money that he’s going to need to make the kind of signings that are going to, hopefully, help him in the positions he’s going to need.
“You’ve got to get yourself to the next transfer window and then you can get someone who might be able to come in and implement what you want to do more because you need a few players to come in who are used to playing like that because I don’t think a lot of them are.”
Arsenal finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive season.
